Ranunculus Amandine ‘Barby’ produces large, rose-like blooms in beautiful shades of pink, with layer upon layer of softly ruffled petals. The Amandine series is prized for strong stems and beautiful flowers, making Barby an excellent choice for both the cutting garden and spring bouquets.
Ranunculus are wonderfully productive plants, producing multiple flowers from each corm over their bloom season. Cut regularly and you'll be rewarded with more blooms to bring indoors. Their excellent vase life is another reason ranunculus are favorites of both flower farmers and home gardeners.
Planting time: October–December here in the South Carolina Midlands. In other areas, planting time will vary with your climate; gardeners in colder regions generally plant in early spring.
Soak: Soak corms for 4–6 hours in room-temperature water before planting. Don't exceed 6 hours, as prolonged soaking can encourage rot.
Plant: Plant 2–3 inches deep and 4–6 inches apart, with the claws facing down.
Soil: Choose a location in full sun with well-drained soil. Amend beds or containers with aged compost and an all-purpose fertilizer before planting. Avoid soggy conditions.
Water: Keep the soil moist but not wet, allowing the surface to dry slightly between waterings.
Protect: Protect plants when temperatures fall below 32°F. Use frost cloth or a sheet supported above the plants with hoops, coat hangers or whatever you have on hand—the important thing is to keep the covering from touching the foliage during freezing weather.
Bloom season: Spring. Regular cutting encourages the plants to continue producing flowers.
