Memorial Day on the Farm

If you are a veteran, on active duty, or are the spouse or child of someone who served, Happy Memorial Day. We are grateful.

As the child of a World War II veteran and the wife of a Vietnam veteran, I recognize the sacrifice — and sometimes the permanent effects — of war. Thank you.

Gardening can be a deeply healing and stress-relieving experience. In that spirit, we have decided to place all of our dahlia tubers and curated dahlia collections on sale this week.

If you’ve spent any time reading about dahlias online, you may have come away thinking you missed your chance to plant them this year.

But here in the South, our growing season — and our heat — changes the equation.

At the farm, we regularly continue planting dahlias through June with the goal of harvesting flowers deep into fall. Some of our favorite bouquets of the entire season come in September and October, when cooler nights begin to return and the garden settles into a softer, richer season.

For Southern gardeners, this can actually be one of the best planting windows for fall blooms.

As temperatures begin to moderate later in the season, dahlias often reward gardeners with:

  • stronger flushes of blooms

  • richer color

  • beautiful long stems

  • armloads of flowers just when many summer plants begin to fade

There is something especially beautiful about gathering flowers in October while much of the garden world begins slowing down.

Another advantage to growing dahlias in the South is that we are often able to leave the tubers in the ground over winter. The following spring, they emerge when they are ready.

In the photo below, you can see dahlias we planted a couple of weeks ago for fall blooms. Behind them are dahlias planted last year, already preparing to bloom this week.

Based on your feedback during the plant sale, we also added curated dahlia collections to the website to make choosing varieties easier. These collections were designed to bloom beautifully together in Southern fall gardens.

The sale includes:

  • individual dahlia tubers

  • curated collections

  • shipping

  • local delivery

  • farm pickup

Whether you’re planting your first dahlia or adding to an established cutting garden, there is still time to grow something beautiful this season.

This will be the final week of our dahlia tuber sale for the season.
