Shifting Seasons: Weathering the Heat & What’s Ahead for Fall

The temperatures are finally trending downward, and we are grateful. The high heat lingered longer this year, offering quite a challenge. Weather hurdles are a given in farming, so we do what we can to pivot and adapt—as the saying goes, “We plan, God laughs.”
Many of you have asked how we’ve been working in the heat. Our small but mighty team rose to the occasion. We shifted our harvest earlier in the morning to be inside the processing shed by 11:00 AM, protecting our health and avoiding the worst of the afternoon heat.
Many of our flowers proved amazingly resilient, helped along by timely rains and healthy soil. Good soil has ample organic matter to hold critical moisture in the root zone and a thriving microbiome that breaks down nutrients for the plants. Of course, a few crops fell victim to the stress—several varieties of Solidago were overtaken by disease. We have cleared those beds and will refresh the soil to plant hardier varieties once temperatures settle consistently into the 70s. A fresh start.
Farm Updates for Fall:
Fall Wreath Workshop: We have decided to skip the in-person wreath class this year to focus our energy on bed restoration and fall planting prep.
Our new dried flower party confetti is coming soon.
